Empathy Mapping Empowers Rewiring Product Documentation
For an industry-recognized product suite, documentation was still following archaic practices. It was dated, system-centric. Its 4,000-odd user base still relied on documentation being sent over emails as zipped files. While a new content strategy established the foundation for documentation maturity, we leveraged the power of empathy mapping to align existing content to match user expectations.
What can the audience expect to learn?
The audience will be able to ascertain the fundamentals of empathy mapping from my presentation, and how the design thinking method can be used effectively in aligning product documentation to the expectations of users. In a world where technical communicators struggle to get the users’ perspective of content, this session will provide the answers they need.
Debarshi Gupta Biswas, Cognizant
Debarshi brings to the table more than two decades of experience in technical communication. He manages geographically separated teams in Cognizant, runs documentation engagements with some of Cognizant’s strategic clients, architects solutions, and drives team growth and expansion. Debarshi likes conducting as is state analysis of content for clients and fosters a consultative approach to recommending a future state roadmap.
March from Scratch - Information Development
Developing a complete new documentation for a product that is completely new is challenging. This calls for planning and executing all the stages in DDLC very diligently. From audience analysis to delivery, from defining and classifying topics to DITA implementation, we have to be on your toes to enable the documentation see the light of the day.
What can the audience expect to learn?
1. How to approach a documentation from scratch?
2. How to chalk out a foolproof documentation plan and TOC?
3. How to involve a field person from day 1 in your documentation activity?
4. Thinking out-of-the-box for value additions
5. Conceptualizing complex features for illustration

Creating Community of Practice
In the business world, the only constant is change. It would be more accurate to say the only constant in the business world is growth. In any industry, the organizations that consistently succeed are those who understand the importance of learning more and being able to do more with each passing day. Companies that are not focused on continuous learning and growth may be able to tread water for the time being but will eventually be swept away with the shifting tides in their industry.
Still, it is one thing to say your organization is progressive, forward-thinking, and always looking to ramp up their efforts. But to truly become the growth-focused organization you claim to be, your approach to said growth needs to be systematic and strategic. Which is where communities of practice come in.
What can the audience expect to learn?
Often the Technical Writers in most organizations feel undervalued and as recognized. They are unable to show the amount of effort they put in to create a document from scratch and manage the content. Community of Practice (CoP) provides them an opportunity and platform to share their efforts and new ideas with the rest of organization.
Abhinav Aditya, Aristocrat
I’m an innovative Technical Writer with 12+ years of experience. An Information Architect, Content Strategist, Speaker, People Manager, and Mentor.
From Document Search to Document Understanding
To understand our documents, we need to semantically understand the structure of the documents. With standards like DITA focusing on generic structures, combined with knowledge graphs, this can be turned into a methodology for semantically understanding the structure of documents. This provides more precise text analysis, as we can focus on the right method in context of the document structure.
What can the audience expect to learn?
In my talk I will outline the methodology based on a concrete example of a real-world DITA dataset transformed to a knowledge graph as a “digital twin” of the DITA dataset and outline the possibilities to enhance editing of content and to use the content of the dataset in different context including chatbots, virtual reality, video, artificial intelligence etc.
Helmut Nagy, Semantic Web
Helmut joined Semantic Web Company (SWC) in 2010, and has been COO since 2013. He is a known expert in the field of knowledge management and semantic AI. He has worked with global organizations to help them develop their AI strategies based on knowledge graphs. Helmut is co-author of The Knowledge Graph Cookbook.
Experience Content with Micro-content
In these evolving and diversifying times, the perception of content is changing to “Shorter the best”. In this process, I take the chunking of content into the picture. I want you to experience the environment in which your content lives, the structure designing, and at the same time, engage your users with the concepts of micro-content.
What can the audience expect to learn?
The big-picture goal to diversify your micro-content strategy while using it to supplement your overall content/engagement efforts will be the key takeaway for the audience. The questions of W’s and H’s of practical applications to implement micro-content will be answered.

What can the audience expect to learn?
- the definition, priorities, and goals of ContentOps
- the metrics of the ContentOps maturity model
- the benefits of assessing the maturity of ContentOps, and
- how to use the ContentOps maturity model.

Addressing Technical Debt in your Content
After finally completing your content strategy, how do you ensure your content implementation does not devolve? Effective tracking activities during the content production processes will inform you on decisions of when and where to incorporate design decisions, as well as when to refactor content. This session will explore the iterative process of maintaining your content to address technical debt.
What can the audience expect to learn?
From this session, the audience will understand the importance of tracking content and learn to employ the different methods. The audience will also learn to address technical debt by examining when to adjust the content standards, templates, and style sheets, and when refactoring is required.

With experience in software, content modelling, and content strategy, Kathryn aspires to expand and contribute to the field of Information Architecture.
Do More -- With Less
It’s those times again. When organizations tighten belts until those wearing them are choking. How do you thrive regardless of the ups and downs in the economy? This presentation is about what we do at Whatfix to ensure that we are doing more with less – much before we realize there’s less to go around.
Nibu Thomas, Whatfix
Nibu Thomas is the director of Information development at Whatfix,
He has over 25 years of work experience – entirely in product based organizations.
He would like to consider himself an out-of-the-box thinker and a compelling storyteller.
And this explains why he has a social selling index (SSI) that’s in the top 1% in the industry and network.
Between Competition and Collaboration
In recent years the software industry has seen a rising trend towards lightweight documentation on the side of SMEs. While this may work on a small scale, it may get tricky when there is a need to interact with more corporate documentation environments. Bridging the gap between markup and markdown can present challenges not only on the technical level. Enter a scenario in which you need to pull markup-agnostic content contributors to the other side and learn how Lightweight DITA might help you to foster collaboration instead of deepening competition.
What can the audience expect to learn?
Usage of small-scale markdown approaches can lead to island processes and prove problematic for all stakeholders, creating frictions in the overall workflow. Besides general observations an ongoing effort of integrating Markdown is presented, where sources are processed by a typical static site generator.
Frank Wegmann, Software AG
Frank Wegmann has 20+ years of experience in the markup world. At Software AG, he has been advancing custom automated build systems for technical documentation since 2001, in recent years with more focus on DITA. He is a regular speaker at international conferences and engaged in OASIS DITA committees, now also as co-chair of the Lightweight DITA subcommittee.
